Cathedral and Old Mainz

In and around St. Martin’s Cathedral and through the Old City

For over a thousand years the mighty St. Martin’s Cathedral has towered over the ancient city of Mainz. Here kings have been crowned and the Protestant Reformation was kindled. Discover its unique features, then stroll across the surrounding squares and through the winding lanes of this picturesque medieval part of the old Mainz.

Market Square

The tour begins on the magnificent Market Square where we will see colourful, ornately decorated old houses and the beautiful renaissance well. If we are lucky, we will also experience the traditional farmers’ market which still takes place here every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday (until 14:00) as it has for centuries.

Cherry Garden

We will stroll through the nearby pedestrianised old town (Altstadt), walk along the romantic winding lanes of the medieval part of the city and discover picturesque little squares such as the Cherry Orchard (Kirschgarten) with its half-timbered houses.
