Discover Roman Mainz, the army headquarters and Roman capital Mogontiacum. This tour combines one of the world's most important museums of ancient seafaring, the remains of the largest Roman theatre north of the Alps and one of the most atmospheric museums in Germany, the Isis and Mater Magna Temple.
In the museum you will see the almost 2000 year-old wrecks of several Roman ships which were sensationally discovered in Mainz in the 1980's. We will walk between impressive life-size reconstructions which show not only the engineering skills of the Roman shipbuilders but also give us an insight into life at this important frontier of the Roman Empire.
Located under a shopping mall in the city centre is the well-preserved Sanctuary of the Roman Temple of Isis and Mater Magna. The ambient lighting contributes to the atmosphere of this archaeological area and we are transported back to an ancient and distant world. Follow the see-through trail above the excavations and marvel at the well-displayed and diverse objects discovered at the site such as the spellbinding curse tablets.
For an additional fee of 50 €, this tour can optionally be given dressed as a Roman noblewoman.
If you are interested in a shorter tour, see also the Museums Tour which only
visits the Museum of Ancient Seafaring and the Roman Theatre.
